Nakskov
Denmark
Lolland's largest town sits at the inner end of Nakskov Fjord, a wildlife reserve known for its bird life, with a little central core of cafés and restaurants alongside the water. The town preserves a medieval street pattern with half-timbered houses, warehouses, and merchants' courtyards, and its landmarks include the early 13th-century Sankt Nikolai Kirke, a 1600 granary, and a 1645 pharmacy with a baroque facade. A sugar museum traces the island's long history as Denmark's main sugar-beet growing region, and the town was the birthplace of H.N. Andersen, who founded the East Asiatic Company in the late 19th century.
