A compact waterfront town on Zealand's southwest coast, Skælskør traces its name to a 1231 entry in King Valdemar's cadastre, where it appears as "the town by the mussel shore" — a reference still reflected in the town's coat of arms. It is home to the Harboe Brewery, one of Denmark's largest, alongside the food company Bähncke. A tiny central core offers cafés and restaurants within easy reach of the water.
