Sønderborg

Sønderborg is a walkable Danish town on the island of Als, near the Danish-German border, with a centre full of cafés and restaurants and water close at hand. The town grew up around Sønderborg Castle, established shortly before 1200, and carries a layered history shaped by the Prussian bombardment of 1864 — which destroyed or damaged more than 80 percent of its buildings — and the region's transfer between Denmark and Germany before reunification in 1920. It is also home to the Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra and a campus of the University of Southern Denmark.
