San Andres Xecul
Guatemala
San Andrés Xecul's colonial Catholic church is the town's main draw, a vivid landmark in the Totonicapán department of Guatemala's northwestern highlands. The town has a layered history: in 1820, its residents joined an indigenous uprising against colonial taxation led by Atanasio Tzul, and after Central American independence it passed through several jurisdictions before settling into Totonicapán department in 1872. Mountains are close by, and the wider region holds UNESCO World Heritage sites.
