San Cristobal Totonicapan

San Cristóbal Totonicapán is a tiny Guatemalan town in the Totonicapán department whose name derives from the Nahuatl for "above the hot water," reflecting its position along the Samalá River. Founded during the Spanish colonial period, it was part of the short-lived State of Los Altos in 1838 before that secession was suppressed. A 1976 earthquake caused widespread destruction, though the town has substantially rebuilt. A bridge over the Samalá River, introduced in the early 20th century, remains in active use today.
