Tecpan Guatemala
Guatemala
Founded in 1524 on the site of Iximché — the former Kaqchikel capital and Guatemala's first colonial capital — Tecpán Guatemala sits in the Central Highlands of Chimaltenango, with the Iximché archaeological site still accessible from town. Its Nahuatl name translates roughly as "royal house" or "mansion of the gods." The town lies along the Inter-American Highway, making it a practical base for exploring the wider highland region, which is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
