Pocket-sized Western Cape town set beside the Theewaterskloof Dam — the largest dam in the Western Cape and a major water source for Cape Town — Villiersdorp sits in a fruit-growing and wine-producing valley in the Overberg region. The surrounding valley specialises in deciduous fruit and viticulture, and the local co-operative is the only facility in South Africa that processes and dries persimmons. Founded in 1843 by Field Cornet Pieter de Villiers, the town lies between the Waterval and Baviaansberge mountains.
