San Martin Jilotepeque
Guatemala
A small Guatemalan town in the mountains of the Chimaltenango department, San Martín Jilotepeque carries a long history: a Dominican mission settlement through the colonial era, it absorbed families displaced by the 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes and was among the original municipalities of the Guatemalan state established in 1825. The 1976 earthquake left it nearly entirely destroyed, and the town was rebuilt. Its name combines a saint's dedication with a Nahuatl phrase meaning "on the hill of tender corn."
